Does your knee hurt in the morning? This may be a sign of an orthopedic disorders.
There are several common orthopedic disorders.
Orthopedics includes anything that concerns the ligaments, muscles, and joints. Orthopedic disorders include injuries, ailments and diseases that cause dislocated shoulders, knee injuries, whiplash, foot pain, torn cartilages, and fibromyalgia. Doctors who specialize in these disorders of the musculoskeletal system are called orthopedic surgeons.
Orthopedics is a very large specialty. Orthopedic surgeons may specialize in one or two parts of the body such as knees or shoulders. Issues commonly treated include:
– Sprains, torn ligaments, and strains
– Tendon injuries, bursitis and pulled muscles
– Dislocations and fractures
– Bowlegs, knock knees, hammertoes, and bunions
– Sciatica, ruptured disks, scoliosis, and low back pain
– Osteoporosis and arthritis
– Unequal leg length and club foot
– Cerebral palsy, muscular dystrophy, and bone tumors
– Abnormalities of the toes and fingers
– Growth abnormalities
– Degenerative joint disease
Many of these conditions are treated with non-surgical interventions such as physical therapy. Orthopedic surgery has seen significant advancements in technique and now many surgeries are performed using arthroscopy. During this type of surgery, the surgeon makes very tiny incisions and uses an instrument with a small camera attached to perform the surgery.
The most common specialties in orthopedics are the adult knee, adult hip, sports medicine, and total joint. Some orthopedic surgeons also a specialist in arthroscopy.
The major orthopedics hospitals in the United States are Mayo Clinic, Hospital for Special Surgery, John Hopkins Hospital, Cleveland Clinic, Hospital for Joint Diseases, Thomas Jefferson University Hospital, Rush University Medical Center, and Cedars-Sinai Medica Center. These hospitals perform the majority of orthopedic surgeries in the country.
Orthopedic surgeons diagnose common orthopedic disorders and then create a treatment plan. The treatment may include exercise, surgery, medication, or other treatment options.
